Welcome to “Carina’s pick” and I’ll be introducing the latest Korean news in English. Don't go away as we will be looking at weekly top news together-!

The biggest news will be Moon’s declaration in renewable energy, the nominated foreign minister and available free dental care news for foreign residents.

President Moon Jae-in on Monday declared an energy paradigm shift away from nuclear and coal, vowing to end all existing plans for new nuclear reactors and phase out outdated facilities.

The nation’s first atomic plant, Kori-1 has stopped its operation on Sunday : this is right after Nuclear Safety and Security Commission’s decision on June 9. The commission has declared that the plant will halt the operation.

During Moon’s speech, Moon has said Kori-1 has contributed greatly to the industrial era of 1970’s and 80’s but believes that it is now time to change for the environment and in energy policy. Currently, South Korea produces 70 percent of its electricity from nuclear reactors and thermal coal. The government aims to produce 20 percent of power from clean and renewable sources by 2030.

It’s the foreign minister Kang Kyung Hwa’s first official day on Monday.

The Foreign ministry has received many followers and support in her appointment but Kang will face few challenges ahead. The first one will be the U.S - Korea summit; a meeting between President Moon and Trump. She will be facilitating policy coordination on North Korea and address Moon’s concern of North Korea. Along the line, Korea Herald reports that it is likely that they will discuss Trump’s strategy on pressuring North Korea.

But the publication has said South Korea is in the bad position on talks as the country has decided to pause the deployment of THAAD since early this month. The meeting is expected to take place in June 29-30th in Washington.

Seoul will be offering free dental care for vulnerable foreigners residing in Korea. The program is open to foreign residents 10 years or older who cannot receive the check-up. Treatment includes tooth extraction, nerve treatment and fillings. The service will be available on Tuesday and Friday from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m at the Southwest Global center.

That’s it for today and this has been the Korean news update.
